ANATOLI  HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME NADIA AND I'M CURRENTLY TWENTY YEARS OLD. I'M PART OF THE HUMANS AND I'M A DANCER. ------------------------------------------------- Nadia, born and raised. That's me. I was born somewhere near Russia, but my parents were practically nomads, always on the move. They never knew where they were going or who they were visiting next. They traveled with a band of performers, mostly dancers and the like. It was good money, and they were talented, but it caused a lot of problems, moving around all the time with a newborn. I didn't grow up knowing how to write very well. I was a smart enough kid, I guess, but my parents never took the initiative to enroll me in school. I'm pretty sure that I don't even have a birth certificate to enroll with. But that's fine with me. Learning to speak Russian and the very broken English that one of the performers knew was enough for me. I did grow up, however, dancing and performing. It was always such a thrill to be in front of hundreds of thousands of people with their eyes all on you. They were all waiting to be amazed. When I got into my teens, I began to ribbon dance, which was a lot more expressive than anything else I had done before. I was more often than not dancing with the other teens in the troupe, as the younger dancers were always the more creative ones. Being in a team like ours, it built a sort of connection with people and a deep sense of trust. I guess it made me like people a lot more than most. Our band of performers began to travel through Europe, making stops in Hungary, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain. I couldn't even begin to explain how fun it was to travel and to see the rest of Europe after living on the edge of Russia for so long. What made it so great was the friends I had with me and the people I met going through all those countries. But something very wrong happened when we sailed to England. We were set to perform in London. Everyone was excited and anxious, as London was completely new territory for all of us. However, the day before we were supposed to perform, our lead dancer, Yvette, was found with burns all over her body. There had been no fire anywhere in the vicinity. She wouldn't leave the confines of her room until it was dark outside. She had never been this way until we arrived in London. Luckily, our performance was at night, but Yvette was forced to lay out because she was feeling light-headed, and she was as pale as a ghost. Some of the senior dancers took her to the hospital, but they could find nothing wrong with her. I was skeptical when they took her away, as were my parents. They suddenly wanted nothing to do with England and instead made their way back to Russia. I wanted to follow them, I really did, but I didn't want to go back to Russia. And I wasn't going to. I stayed with the troupe and kept doing the only thing I had really ever known. When I was around fifteen, I was taken out of the troupe by a social worker, and after hearing that my parents had "abandoned" me, I was placed into a foster home. I learned how to write, read, and speak English. Which wasn't a bad thing. I very much did not enjoy being kept from dancing, but becoming literate was a fortunate event. Three years in that foster home I spent. Once I was eighteen, I went back to doing what I grew up with. Except this time I didn't dance with ribbons, or anything, really. I guess it's what the English liked. But I didn't mind putting on shows as long as I got to do what I wanted. |
