VOE HEY THERE, THEY CALL ME EDIE AND I'M CURRENTLY NINETEEN YEARS OLD. I'M PART OF THE FAMILIARS AND I'M AN ART STUDENT. ------------------------------------------------- ❝ ... you want to hear my story? I can't promise you'll like it, but fine. The most obvious place to start is the beginning, right? To put it nicely, mum was a meth junkie. I know. I know what you're thinking. Oh, just great, another sob story. I'll spare you most of the dirty, gritty details. I won't tell you that mum used my brother and I for target practice with her beer bottles or she sold us out on the corner to get her fix, because well... she wasn't around much, to be honest. When she was, she was sneaking through the backdoor at 5am, trying not to let it slam as she tossed a cold breakfast of McDonald's on the table and slipped into her bedroom with whoever it was for the night. If we ever saw her, it was a flash of bleach blonde hair or a peak into the thin crack of the bathroom door ajar -- passed out on the tile, of course. No, can't say we saw much of mum, Jasper and I. We saw a lot more of daddy, who was like a super hero to us. Honest! He was the glue that held our completely fucked family together... we never quite realized he was falling apart at the seams. He always seemed so strong, even when we questioned mum's whereabouts or those marks on her arms or who exactly she was dragging into the house every night and day. He would just laugh, that twinkle in his eye, and say, "let's go the park!" or "how about some ice cream?" And then, one day... no more daddy. I'll fast forward through this part, for my sake. There was chaos in the legal system -- no one knew where to put us, but mum was not an option. In fact, I never saw mum again, which is perfectly fine with me. Jasper and I were eventually left to our aunt and uncle, who were just as poor as mum had been but at least much nicer. More around. I was ten then, and Jasper was eight. We were pretty alright from then on, though we often wondered what happened to daddy and where the hell mum was. Years later, we would find out that daddy just couldn't handle it anymore and committed suicide. As for mum... who knows. Can't say I really care. And can you blame me? I was never really very good in school; I honestly sort of fucked around, my head in the clouds, a pencil doodling in the margin line of my work. Art was my primary interest, a damn good distraction that I soon learned I was damn good at -- especially sketching and painting. Luckily enough, I sort of managed to get my head straight when I turned about fifteen. My grades went up, but I just couldn't stop doodling, which never failed to irritate my teachers. I kept to myself most of the time, not caring much for anybody except my brother. My social life didn't really bloom, per se, 'til I was about eighteen. By then, I had heard about vampires, and well... they sounded pretty fucking cool to me. Typical naiveté, I suppose? Anyway, I graduated from college and started university with -- lo and behold -- art as my major. It didn't take long to figure out that university wasn't cheap and I was even quicker in deciding that I wanted to become something like a personal assistant for a vampire. So, I did, and don't ask how -- because it's a real secretive and difficult process. I worked with Madame Dupont for a few months, but she dropped me because another familiar (that's what they call us) of hers, a guy, and Madame Dupont shagged and decided they were going to marry or something -- not because I'm clumsy or naive or far too curious for my own good! I'm a good familiar, I promise; I won't disappoint! I really need to get my hands on a new vampire to work for though... new semester is coming up and I really need more brushes and paint! ❞ |
